A couple years ago I applied for a part-time job as a tour guide at a historic cemetery not far from where I live. Why? Get ready for Summer Reading Lists!
On a holiday or taking a break – is there a go-to genre you pick up to indulge in?
I noticed that my reading habits tend to change when I’m on holiday. I live in Australia, so it’s usually a hot tropical getaway and I just want to kick back and indulge. So the types of books I pick up to read are usually action-adventure types or maybe an action-packed science fiction, sometimes a queer contemporary. Most of my female friends tend towards a contemporary or chick-lit because they are easy to read, some chose spy thrillers, and their male counterparts tend towards non-fiction titles or thrillers.
The results felt a bit odd considering I was an outlier with all those I spoke to, and there seemed to be a distinct dispersal of genre specific to gender. Yet when you look at popular titles we see fantasy, romantasy, and contemporary dominating the sales. Granted my pool of surveyed people were older readers – those who love reading and a
