  • Jeanette Barnes, known for her urban sketching, was awarded the Henry Moore Scholarship in 1984 and 1987-90, the Richard Ford Spanish Scholarship in 1987 and was the Jerwood Drawing 2004 prize winner.

  • Most of the work in the URBAN DRAWINGS and DRAWING ARCHIVE sections of the site are large compressed charcoal or charcoal drawings and are generally between 200-230 x 151cms (78″-88″x 59″) or 150 x 200-230cms  (59 x 78″-88″) in storlek dependent on orientation. Nearly all of the large drawings in these sections have very good quality, limited edition reproduction giclee prints in A2, A1 and A0 sizes that can be ordered.

    My practice engages with the constant development within the urban environment. I am fascinated by the way vast architectural projects are changing the nature and demography of given areas. I make many sketches outside and then go back to my studio and begin to build up large pieces through trial and error. These drawings are not about one single moment, but a combination of ideas and experiences, bringing together the most interesting aspects from different sketches to create the final piece.     Dr. Jeannette Barnes has a passion for dogs that extends far beyond her calling as a veterinarian, and into the realm of history, anthropology and the shadowy regions of myth and lore–all inspired by their fascinating ancestry and development from wolves.

    “All dogs, from the tiniest two-pound toy Yorkshire Terrier to the massive 200-pound Irish Wolfhound, emerged from this undomesticated animal,” Dr. Barnes muses. “Do you want a small cuddly dog? Someone already developed the perfect dog just for you. How about a large, powerful hunting breed? Exactly the right dog exists. We’ve got dogs to sniff out cancer; dogs to dial 911; dogs as military heroes.”

    Inspired by the intimacy, longevity, and depth of the relationship between people and dogs, Dr. Barnes set out to show that dogs were not solely instinctive beings; but imbued with spirit and the

    Biography

    After completing a Fine Art grad at Liverpool Polytechnic, Jeanette Barnes studied Fine Art at the Royal Academy Schools and Printmaking at the Royal College of Art. For the past twenty-five years she has worked on large energetic drawings of the urban landscape. Jeanette has exhibited in many group and solo shows including several times at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and Jerwood Drawing Prize Exhibition and has work in many corporate and private collections. She has been awarded various scholarships and prizes, most recently the Hugh Casson Drawing Prize at the 2013 RA Summer exhibition. Jeanette has taught at the Royal Drawing School for a number of years and has been a tutor on the Royal Academy Outreach Programme for over twenty years.
