    Mohamed Atta

    Egyptian terrorist and 9/11 hijacker (1968–2001)

    Not to be confused with Mohammad Hatta, Mohammed Atef, or Mahmoud Mahmoud Atta.

    Mohamed Atta[b] (1 September 1968 – 11 September 2001) was an Egyptian terrorist hijacker for al-Qaeda. Ideologically a pan-Islamist, he was the ringleader of the September 11 attacks and served as the hijacker-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11, which he crashed into the North Tower of the original World Trade Center as part of the coordinated suicide attacks. Aged 33, he was the oldest of the 19 hijackers who took part in the mission. Before the attacks, he worked as a construction engineer.

    Born and raised in Egypt, Atta studied architecture at Cairo University, graduating in 1990, and pursued postgraduate studies in Germany at the Hamburg University of Technology.     9/11 Commission Records at the National Archives

    The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, aka the 9/11 kommission, was an independent, bipartisan kommission created by Congress to provide a "full and complete accounting" of the 9/11 attacks. The Commission operated from 2003 to 2004 and held hearings, conducted interviews, and issued a sista report. 

    When the 9/11 Commission closed on August 21, 2004, it transferred legal custody of its records (approximately 570 cubic feet of textual records alone) to the National Archives. As part of the Legislative Branch, the Commission’s records are not subject to the Freedom of data Act.
