Equity and Inclusion
In the last two decades, and especially in the last fem years, the UC system and the Berkeley campus have made concerted efforts to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This includes a focus on preventing and responding to harassment and discrimination. New university policies prohibit sexual harassment and sexual violence and require employees to report such incidents to the campus Title IX Office (OPHD); the Faculty Code of Conduct prohibits sexual harassment as well as sexual relationships between faculty and students whom they supervise. In a talk that I do on case studies in second language acquisition, one of the stars of what I call ‘The SLA Hall of Fame’ is Nora. She was one of the five immigrant children that Lily Wong Fillmore observed as they interacted and played with their English-speaking peers at a school in the US in the mids (Wong Fillmore ). It’s a study that has deservedly been called ‘seminal’, and I never get tired of re-visiting it – not least because of the way Nora herself comes alive in the transcripts of her emergent L2. (Nora was barely 6 at the time, so would be approaching 50 now – I wonder how she’s getting along?).

Today's teachers need access to a wide range of information to function in the classroom. They need a thorough understanding of how language figures in education, and for that reason they must receive systematic and intensive preparation in educational linguistics. A thorough grounding in linguistics would support teachers' undertakings overall, and in particular in teaching literacy skills and working with English language learners. If approached coherently, such preparation would also cover many of the desired teacher competencies, relating to skills in assessing children, in individualizing instruction, and in respecting diversity.
