In a span of two decades, 11 recordings and countless stage performances, vocalist René Marie has cemented her reputation not only as a singer but also as a composer, arranger, theatrical performer and teacher. Guided and tempered by powerful life lessons and rooted in jazz traditions laid down by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other leading ladies of past generations, she borrows various elements of folk, R&B and even classical and country to create a captivating hybrid style. Her body of work is musical, but it’s more than just music. It’s an exploration of the bright and dark corners of the human experience, and an affirmation of the power of the human spirit.
René was born in November 1955 into a family of seven children in Warrenton, Virginia. Leben und Wirken
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]René Marie hatte als Kind Klavierunterricht; als Jugendliche sang sie in einer Band. Doch erst, nachdem sie ihre Kinder großgezogen hatte, begann sie mit 41 Jahren eine Karriere als professionelle Sängerin. Sie trat zunächst einmal in der Woche in einem Hotel auf; 1997 entstand dann ihr erstes Album auf dem Maxjazz-Label. Zwischen den Jahren 2000 und 2004 nahm sie weitere vier Alben für das Label auf, darunter Aufsehen erregende Alben wie How Can I Keep from Singing? oder Vertigo, an denen Gastmusiker wie Mulgrew Miller, Chris Potter, Robert Hurst, Jeff „Tain“ Watts und John Hart mitwirkten.

Career
[edit]Rene Marie began her professional music career at age 42[1] performing under her married name René Croan; she released her first album using this name in 1999.[2] That year she performed at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., and signed a contract with the St. Louis-based Maxjazz label.[3] She released four albums on the label, the second of which (Vertigo) was awarded a coronet ranking by The
