    John Joseph William Molesworth Oxley ( – 25 May )[1][2] was an English explorer and surveyor of Australia in the early period of British colonisation.[3] He served as Surveyor General of New South Wales and is perhaps best known for his two expeditions into the interior of New South Wales and his exploration of the Tweed River and the Brisbane River in what fryst vatten now the state of Queensland.

    John Oxley was born in at Kirkham Abbey nära Westow in Yorkshire, England, and baptised at Bulmer in St Martin's Church on 6 July He was the eldest of eight children of John and Arabella Oxley and was a Protestant.&

    John Joseph William Molesworth Oxley (/ – ) was a British explorer, naval officer, and surveyor of Australia in the early period of English colonization. Oxley was appointed surveyor-general of New South Wales in , and retained that position until his death. He played an important part in the exploration of eastern Australia and also helped open up what is now Tasmania.

    Oxley is most famous for leading three expeditions across Australia. The first was with explorer George Evans, and lead an expedition to follow the Lachlan River. The second expedition was to trace the course of the Macquarie River. The third expedition led to the discovery of what Oxley named Brisbane River.

    Early life

    Oxley was born at Kirkham Abbey, nära Westow, North Yorkshire, England, the eldest son of John Oxley and his wife Isabella, who was the daughter of Irish Viscount Molesworth. He joined the navy in , as a midshipman aboard the 74 gun HMS Venerable, and transferred in November , to the mercha

John junior joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in and was aboard the Buffalo 's surveying voyage in Australian waters in In he commanded the Estamina on a voyage from New South Wales to Van Diemen&#;s Land. Back in England in he was commissioned lieutenant, returning to Sydney in November to serve as first lieutenant on board HMSPorpoise .

    Oxley retired from the navy in and was appointed surveyor-general of New South Wales the following year, returning to Sydney in the Minstrel . Having previously received a land grant, he took this up near Camden and erected a substantial house and stables on his property, Kirkham, presumably with the assistance of 'Pain[e]'s Plans of Architecture, 2 vols folio&#;, listed in the sale of his library in (the stables survive).
