    Wisbech care home welcomes singer and actor as resident

    Glennfield Care Home in Wisbech has its very own shining star in the shape of Goan-born actor Ernie who has become a resident.

    Ernie shot to fame in the 1960s when he released his song ‘I Married a hona Wrestler’ under his name Ernest Ignatius which made it onto the most popular radio hållplats in South Asia, Radio Ceylon.

    The song was played to an audience of millions of people and still remains popular with many people from South Asia – you can hear Ernie perform it by searching the song title on Youtube.

    After moving to London and becoming well known in the UK, Ernie began his acting career appearing in the ITV hit police drama, ‘The Bill’. This successful television debut led Ernie to appear on ‘Hotel Babylon’ and Cilla Black’s TV series, ‘Surprise, Surprise’.

    Ernie went on to star in Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s ‘Bombay Dreams,’ in the West End, TV series Murphy’s Law, and later in his career, made an appearance in Coronat

    Usha Uthup was interviewed by Vernon Corea in the early 1960s. Vernon featured her music over the airwaves of Radio Ceylon, subsequently the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. She had flown to Colombo as many other young aspiring Indian musicians did to be on radio programmes of Radio Ceylon. The station was ‘King of the Airwaves’ in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Vernon was instrumental in helping the music careers of so many, including musicians from the Indian sub-continent. In the 1980s, Usha Uthup was a frequent visitor to Vernon Corea’s BBC Office in The Langham, opposite BBC Broadcasting House. Vernon has also interviewed her on his popular BBC Radio London programme, ‘London Sounds Eastern.’
