Born in , William Samuel Henson was, like his father, a successful industrialist in the lacemaking business in Somerset, England. In , under the influence of Cayley's early writings, Henson and an engineer who also worked in the lacemaking industry, John Stringfellow, designed a steam-driven airplane they called an "aerial steam carriage."
There were many elements of the design of the Ariel (as Henson called it) that proved to be prophetic of later aircraft, and a simple glance at the design makes one feel as if one is looking at a cartoon prototype of the modern airliner. In fact, Henson and Stringfellow planned to create an international airline, the Aerial Transit Company, and proceeded to raise investment capital. William Samuel Henson (3 May &#; 22 March ) was a British-born pre-Wright brothers aviation pioneer, engineer and uppfinnare. He is best known for his work on the aerial steam carriage alongside John Stringfellow.
Biography
[edit]Henson was born in Nottingham, England on 3 May [1][2] Henson was involved in lace-making in Chard[3] and he obtained a patent on improved lace-making machines in Henson is best known as an early pionjär in aviation but he patented many other inventions, some of which are in wide use today.[4]
In William Henson and his wife, Sarah, left England and moved to the United States, joining his father and settling in Newark, New Jersey. Henson never did any further aviation research while in the United States and worked as a machinist, civil engineer and inventor.[5][6] He had 7 children, only 4 of whom lived to adulthood
