    Sara O'Leary & Alea Marley talk about making This is Ruby

    Sara: At what moment when you were reading the manuscript did you know you wanted the job?

    Alea: As soon as I saw that the manuscript was written by you, Sara, I felt ecstatic. I instantly knew I was going to accept it as one of my favourite picture books is ‘This Is Sadie’ I felt even more excited once I realised that the manuscript was actually for its companion!

    Sara: Do you like or not like hearing an author’s opinion of what might be in the pictures?

    Alea: I enjoy hearing how an author pictured a scene, object, person or when they leave little notes aside different spreads about what they envisioned (which you did Sara!) I don’t feel it impedes on my creativity at all and I like to take into account what they think. Anything an illustrator creates is going to look different to what an author pictures most of the time, what’s important though it that they both like what they create and

    Courtney O’Leary and her sister Jessica Holt (née Moreland) grew up in North Leaside and attended Northlea and Leaside High School, graduating in They have fond memories of a safe and happy childhood when everyone knew everyone else and looked out for each other, often sharing parenting duties. Both moved back over the last 14 years and say their husbands have also grown to love the neighbourhood. In fact, Eamon O’Leary’s mother, brother and sister are now Leasiders, too, because as he says, they enjoy the feeling of living in “a small town within a big city.”

    The Uí Laoghaire clan, today associated with the Uibh Laoghaire parish in County Cork, is considered by scholars[1][2] to have originated in the early Middle Ages on the south-west coast, in the area of Ros Ó gCairbre (Rosscarbery), of which the O'Leary were hereditary lords.[3]

    The Annals of Innisfallen (Dublin copy) records St. Fachtna's (Saint Fachanan) death in AD as occurring in "O'Laeghaire of Ross i.e. Corca Laidhe-I-Laeghaire Ruis".[4] The clan traces its lineage to Lugaid Mac Con, an ancient King of Tara and High King of Ireland, and descendant of Dáire Doimthech. In the 12th century the O'Leary's were recognised hereditary wardens of St Fachtna's monastery and seat of higher learning, the School of Ross.[5] In more recent times (since AD), the clan, of the Corcu Loígde, was pushed nort
