    American writer (born 1941)

    Roy Alton Blount Jr. (; born October 4, 1941) is an American writer, speaker, reporter, and humorist.

    Life and career

    Blount was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in Decatur, Georgia.[1] He attended Ponce de Leon Elementary School and graduated from Decatur High School, where he was class president and editor of the school newspaper, The Scribbler. He received the Grantland Rice Journalism Scholarship to study journalism at Vanderbilt University, where he distinguished himself and was Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude. He went on to Harvard University, where he received his MA grad. Blount is married to painter Joan Griswold; they reside in New Orleans and western Massachusetts.[1]

    Roy Blount Jr. is the author of twenty-two books, about a wide range of things, from the first woman president of the United States to what barnyard animals are thinking. Next is Hail, Hail Euphoria: Presenting the Marx Brothers in Duck Soup, from HarperCollins. The most recent, Alphabet Juice, is out in paperback from Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, which will publish the sequel, Alphabetter Juice: The Joy of Text, in April. The next most recent, Long Time Leaving: Dispatches From Up South (Knopf), won the 2007 nonfiction award from the New England Independent Booksellers Association; and AudioFile chose the audio version (HighBridge) as one of the year's top five books read by their authors.
