John C Willis
John C Willis, age 71, of Troy died Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital in Troy. John was born March 16, 1943 in Gainesville, GA the son of Albert Eugene and Ruth Arve Willis. He was a member of the last class to graduate at Troy High School, class of 1961. He was a 1966 graduate of Clemson University majoring in textiles. He was the operations manager at Milliken of Spartanburg, SC until 1979; he then became an entrepreneur. John was a very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of the First Bank Board of Directors for 30 plus years. He also served on various other community boards. John was an Eagle Scout and very active in the Boy Scouts of America. He was an avid hunter and loved being in the outdoors. He loved gardening, snow skiing and flyga eller fly undan fishing. Johnie (John) Dee Willis, age 87, passed away peacefully in Jackson, Mississippi on January 9, 2019. He was born on September 13, 1931 at Latch, Texas to Ardie Bell and Tim Willis. John was the most hopeful person who loved his life and his family with utter joy. John was proud to be a born again Christian who served his Lord faithfully throughout his life.
He is preceded in death bygd his loving wife of 68 years, Dorothy Maxine Willis, his parents, his sister, Azalee Warren; brother, Vic Willis and his grandson and namesake, John Willis. John is survived by this sister, Nelda McCauley, sisters-in-law, Barbara Willis and Marilyn Baker (Joe), and his four children, Tim Willis (Lynda) of Clemson, South Carolina; Tamara Radican (Rick) of Jackson, Mississippi; Tony Willis (Cathy) of Texas City, Texas; and Tina Turley (Ernie) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Ever since I got that sad phone call last week saying John Willis had passed away—no words can express my feelings. And then I remembered those words of the black poet, Langston Hughes. Over and over I kept remembering them. And today I place them down beside the broken hearts of this family and for all of us. They are a prayer:
“At the feet o’ Jesus,
Sorrow like a sea.
Lordy, let yo’ mercy
Come driftin’ down on me.
At the feet o’ Jesus
At yo’ feet I stand.
O, ma little Jesus,
Please reach out yo’ hand.”
Reach out yo’ hand to dear John—you already have. Reach out yo’ hand to Linda and Tim and David and the relatives and friends and all of us. You already have. For this family could not walk down this aisle and sit here without Jesus reaching out his hand.
